Leadership Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Partner on new Virtual Event: LEAD the Way Walk-a-thon

Manassas, VA – May 1st-22nd Leadership Prince William (LPW) and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce are hosting their first Lead the Way Virtual Walk-a-thon fundraiser. This event is made possible thanks to several generous sponsors, including the LEAD sponsor, Youth for Tomorrow. Participants can walk when and where they choose, with ideas provided on the event website: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/leadthewaywalk/

For the last few years, LPW and the Chamber have collaborated on Gourmet Guys Give Back, an event designed to bring the community and local leaders together around GREAT food prepared by amateur chefs. This year with COVID restrictions still in place, the two not-for-profit organizations decided to do something a little different.

Says LPW Executive Director Andrea Money, “We wanted to do a fundraiser that encourages business and community leaders to give at the same time that it encourages them to get out of their house or office–or on the treadmill if that’s more their thing–enjoying the people and places that make our community outstanding. “ She noted that part of the value of the LPW program is in the places participants get to visit and the people they get to meet. “This virtual walk idea hearkens back to that.”

The LEAD the Way Walk-a-thon invites participants to register, donate and participate from anywhere in the country. LPW Alumni living in California, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and South Carolina have already signed up and donated. Using a virtual platform, there will be no central gathering point or designated day for the event. Rather it will span from May 1-22 and participants may walk when they want for however long they want. Past LPW Classes and Chamber member businesses are encouraged to form teams and challenge one another in showing their support.

“The platform and the fact that there is not a central gathering point or specified date encourages participants to get creative and make this fun for themselves and their teammates/supporters. Ideas have been posted to the event website and we’ll be continuing to add to that page as we receive additional suggestions,” says Chamber President & CEO Debbie Jones, a 2010 graduate of LPW.

Your support will help LPW and the Chamber continue to cover operating costs and offer quality programming in a year when COVID continues to create financial challenges for not-for-profit organizations. In addition, this challenge helps to remind us all that, just like our beautiful community in springtime, our businesses and leaders will keep bouncing back in creative and surprising ways.

Visit https://secure.qgiv.com/event/leadthewaywalk/ for details on how to register for this event.

You can also help LPW and the Chamber meet their $20,000 fundraising goal by making a donation. Text 50155 to securely give using keyword “LPW” + the amount you’d like to donate. A link will be sent to allow you to complete your donation.

Local Leaders Work Around COVID Pandemic to Help Community

Manassas, VA– Members of Leadership Prince William’s (LPW) Class of 2020 are keeping their promise made to the community prior to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. As leaders of integrity in the Prince William community, the Class of 2020 remains committed to their promise made to the at-risk youth who reside on the Youth for Tomorrow(YFT) campus. “Our chosen class project was to provide an obstacle course and sensory rooms at Youth for Tomorrow,” said Andrea Van Wambeke, Class of 2020 Project Manager. “These projects will provide an outlet for at-risk youth to grow, heal and become confident teens as they mature to adulthood.”

This project was developed, planned and voted on byLeadership Prince William class members. Working as a team, the class was to plan and execute a day of volunteer service through Comcast Cares Day with our partners at Comcast. As in years past, the effort would have coordinated the efforts of hundreds of volunteers working together to complete the project in a matter of hours. This annual tradition was canceled due to the pandemic. Still, the class has decided they will remain committed to the project even though there is no requirement for them to do so.

“Year after year, as the class has planned their project, they individually and collectively develop greater ties to their community, to one another and to their own leadership abilities. The project is meant to show them who they really are,” said Andrea Money, Executive Director of Leadership Prince William. “It would have been easy to forgo this year’s project. But I am pleased that the Class of 2020 has chosen instead to be the kinds of leaders who remain true to their word; especially in dealings with young people who have been accustomed to having promises made to them and then broken.”

“The youth on our campus need a healthy outlet where they can express their emotions in a positive way while still challenging themselves mentally and physically,” said Lawrence Schuster, LPW Class of 2020 and YFT’s Director of Program Utilization. “The youth here were part of creating the vision of building a confidence obstacle course and sensory room. The obstacle course is so fitting for the youth on this campus.” The obstacle course will provide a therapeutic way for the youth staying on campus to learn how to overcome challenges to reach their goals.

Often the children served at Youth For Tomrrow come from places where broken promises and a lack of commitment is the norm. “It’s special to know that LPW cares for the kids so much that they are willing to continue to finish the project to show these kids that they remain committed to them,” said Schuster.

In lieu of the planned day of service, monetary donations will be collected through December 5, 2020 and presented to Youth for Tomorrow to assist in completing construction when it becomes safer to have workers on their campus.

Tax-deductible donations are being requested as well as in-kind donations of supplies, labor and other materials. Find out more  at the project website: https://leadershipprincewilliam.org/news-events/class-project.

Leadership Prince William Begins Recruiting for Class of 2021; This Year with More Scholarships than Ever

Manassas, VA-  Leadership Prince William (LPW) is pleased to announce that, for the second year in a row, they have received a grant from Potomac Health Foundation which enables them to offer up to five full or ten partial scholarships for their Signature Program Class of 2021. Scholarship recipients must also apply for and be accepted to Leadership Prince William’s Signature Program.

Peace Home Lending is also sponsoring two (2) $1,000 scholarships for young professionals who have been accepted to the Signature Program.

From their first class in 2008 to today, the strength of Leadership Prince William’s adult program has been rooted in participation representing all aspects of the greater Prince William community–various professions, industries, demographics, neighborhoods, experiences and skills.  Their alumni run small businesses, work in the technology sector, the arts, education, health care, government, human services, public safety and more. In order to be eligible to participate in the Class of 2021, candidates for the Leadership Prince William Signature Program must have lived or worked in Prince William County, Manassas or Manassas Park for at least one year by September 1, 2020.

Says Leadership Prince William Executive Director Andrea Money, “Through these new scholarships we are enabled to more actively pursue program participants and graduates who espouse diverse perspectives; crucial to ensuring that the leadership in the local business, government and not-for-profit communities accurately reflects and celebrates the racial and ethnic diversity of the people in the greater Prince William community. We have been a majority minority community since 2010.”

Applicants for the Potomac Health Foundation-funded scholarships must additionally meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • You are a person of color (May include the following: mixed race, African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Latin American, etc.);
  • You live or work in the Potomac Health Foundation service area (represented by the following zip codes: 22125, 22079, 22191, 22026, 22135, 22554, 22556, 22134, 22172, 22025, 22193, 22192, 20112)

The Leadership Prince William Signature Program exposes emerging and established community leaders to the many facets of Prince William County and Greater Manassas, from History and Government to Health and Human Services. It can be a life-changing experience for many; allowing participants to look behind the scenes at how their community functions. At the same time, class members are discovering their own strengths and how their leadership may be needed in their workplace and beyond.

Selection for these scholarships is contingent upon selection as a member of the Leadership Prince William Class of 2021. Additional scholarship opportunities may be available for those who do not meet these criteria.

Tickets are available online at www.GourmetGuysGiveBack.com . Adult tickets are $25; children ages 6 to 13 are $10; children under 6 are free.

Guests will be able to sample all of the dishes—appetizers, soups, side dishes and entrees—and vote for their favorites to identify the Peoples’ Choice winners. Local professional chefs will select the Judges’ Award winners. Gourmet Guys Give Back also features a visit from Santa Claus, children’s activities by Imagination Learning Centers, raffle prizes, and live music by Greg Dodson.

Jacqueline Krick, Chairman of the Board for Leadership Prince William and owner of ECU Communications, encouraged families to attend. “Gourmet Guys Give Back has proven to be an excellent family-oriented event for Leadership Prince William. It truly has something for everyone and is worth attending. The food is incredible. It seems to get better each year as the chefs try to outdo themselves and each other. There is no need to be affiliated with either partner organization to participate!”

Another facet of this year’s event: anyone can sponsor a pack of fifteen tickets to be given to the local police or fire and rescue department of their choice for just $300. The package is called “Give Back to the Good Guys” and can be purchased on the website, www.gourmetguysgiveback.com.

“As we move into our fourth year with this event, we hope to continue to build additional support from the community,” says Prince William Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Debbie Jones. “Many of the chefs are visible members of the community—elected officials, business leaders, even some not-for-profit executives—but at Gourmet Guys they lay it all on the line to compete for your votes: as the best amateur chef in our community.” She went on to note that the Chamber is pleased to be partnering with Leadership Prince William for another year.

For a full list of the participating “Gourmet Guys” and a schedule of events, visit www.GourmetGuysGiveBack.com. Interested chefs can still sign up this month.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should call Debbie Jones at 571-765-1877.

Proceeds from Gourmet Guys Give Back benefit the programs and activities of Leadership Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.
