(UPDATED) Leadership Lemonade to Raise Funds for Freedom Museum & Serve Our Willing Warriors

Young Leaders Engage in Philanthropic “Competition”

Leadership Lemonade to Raise Funds for The Freedom Museum and Serve Our Willing Warriors

UPDATE: Red Team raised $875.90 for Serve our Willing Warriors // Blue Team raised $825.37 for The Freedom Museum

Manassas, VA— Now through July 26, local middle and high school students are participating in the Leadership Prince William Summer Youth Academy’s annual Leadership Lemonade fundraiser. The Red Team will be raising funds for Serve Our Willing Warriors (https://willingwarriors.org/); the Blue Team will be raising funds in support of The Freedom Museum (http://freedommuseum.org/).

Leadership Lemonade is an entrepreneurial competition that encourages philanthropy and community awareness among the students. The exercise culminates on Wednesday, July 25 with two competing lemonade stands on the grounds of Youth for Tomorrow—home base for the two-week summer camp.  As part of their experience, last week the students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from eight Prince William/Greater Manassas area not-for-profit organizations. Using the information gathered during their meetings, the students were divided into two teams and asked to choose which organizations they would be raising money for. They chose Serve Our Willing Warriors and the The Freedom Museum.

Throughout the Summer Youth Academy participants have opportunities to enhance their team building, communication and leadership skills, beginning with a personalized Emergenetics behavioral assessment (similar to a DISC profile) and put into action through planning and execution of Leadership Lemonade. Additional aspects of the camp help students understand how their community works together, with themed days focusing on topics like Environment & Open Spaces, Public Safety and History/Government.

Those interested in supporting the students’ Leadership Lemonade efforts may give online via https://leadershipprincewilliam.org/leadership-lemonade-support-your-team/. The Leadership Lemonade stand will be set up at 11835 Hazel Circle Drive in Bristow Virginia on Wednesday, July 25 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Jenkins & Jones Win Awards for Community Leadership

On June 22, Leadership Prince William (LPW) recognized three local leaders for their outstanding contributions to the community at the annual Evening of Excellence Gala in Woodbridge, Virginia.

The Kathy Ellington Alumni Leadership Award was presented to Deborah L. Jones, President and CEO of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. The award is named for the Founding Executive Director of Leadership Prince William and each year is presented to a past graduate of the program who has used their vision, leadership, skills and talents to accomplish somethi

ng notable that has positively impacted Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. The award recipient is chosen from a pool of nominees submitted by LPW alumni, and announced at the Evening of Excellence.

Debbie has almost forty years’ worth of accomplishments showcased across the Prince William community;   from chairing the capital campaign committee to build SERVE to her role in the creation of Leadership Prince William.  A two-time cancer survivor herself she served as Chair of the capital campaign to build the Lake Manassas Cancer Center.  Today she serves on the Career and Technical Education Advisory Council for Prince William County Public Schools and the Advisory Board for the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia.

She is best known for running the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and as a thought leader and motivator who uses her leadership skills to make our community a better place.

She has been recognized through countless awards in our community, but her legacy is truly seen in such things as a 92-bed homeless shelter and the center where cancer patients in Prince William County can be treated closer to home.  Debbie has made it her mission to enhance the business community, and raise the commonwealth’s view of what the Prince William community is all about. She continues that to this day, most recently lobbying LEAD Virginia to spend some time in Prince William County and Manassas when the current class comes to Northern Virginia. Jones graduated from LPW in 2010.

Prince William Board of County Supervisors’ Neabsco District Supervisor John Jenkins and wife Ernestine were presented with the Leadership Prince William Vision Award. The award honors an individual—in this case a couple –who lives or works in Prince William County, Manassas or Manassas Park and whose innovative, strategic or bold leadership has had a positive impact on a significant portion of our community, region, state, nation or world. LPW announced that they would be honoring Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins early in June. They join past award recipients like Virginia Senator Charles J. Colgan and Dr. Gary L. Jones, CEO of Youth for Tomorrow.

Neabsco Supervisor John Jenkins and his wife Ernestine moved their family to Dale City in 1973, where they still reside today. As their family grew, so did their service.

John was a two-tour Vietnam Veteran, who earned the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1980. He then worked in the Fairfax County Public School System until his retirement in 2003.

While raising their three children, they served together in the Dale City Little League, the Dale City Sports Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the Dale City Civic Association, the Gar-Field Senior High School Athletic Boosters Club and several veterans’ organizations, including Dale City VFW Post 1503.

In 1982, Jim McCoart resigned from the Board of County Supervisors and endorsed John Jenkins for the vacant Neabsco Supervisor’s seat.  Jenkins was appointed by the Board to fill the vacancy in October of that year.  Since that time Supervisor Jenkins has served eight consecutive, four-year terms, making him the most senior member of the Board of County Supervisors in length of service and the longest-serving Supervisor in the history of Prince William County. He has twice served as Chairman of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, twice as State President of the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions, once as State President of the Virginia Association of Counties, and twice as Chairman of the Virginia Railway Express Operations board. Governor Mark Warner appointed Mr. Jenkins to serve as a member of the Virginia Geographical Information Network Advisory Board in 2002, as did Governor Tim Kaine in 2007.  In addition, Supervisor Jenkins also represented PWC on the Quantico Marine Corps and Fort Belvoir Base Realignment and Closing (known as BRAC) advisory committees.  He currently serves as a member of the Washington Council of Governments Transportation Planning Board, the Virginia Railway Express Operations Board, and is past Chairman of the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission.

Mrs. Jenkins is known as the engine behind Supervisor Jenkins’ many successful campaigns for office. She is also quite the leader in her own right. She received the Prince William County Human Rights Community Service Award in 2003; the Catherine Spellane Dale City Civic Association Citizen of the Year Award in 1993; and the Dale City Civic Association’s Life Time Volunteer Achievement Award in 2005.

She is the long-time Chairman of the Dale City 4th of July Parade Committee; Education Co-Chairman of the Bel Air Woman’s Club; life member of American Legion Post 364 Ladies Auxiliary; and Vice Chairman on the Board of Directors for Project Mend-A-House.  She works as a youth mentor, a proponent of literacy campaigns, a community activist, and prepares and serves meals at the River Run Senior Home. Together the Jenkins are bold and strategic leaders who continue to have a positive impact on Prince William County.

All winners were selected by a committee of LPW graduates and volunteers serving on the Leadership Prince William Board of Regents.

An Open Letter from Georgetown South

April 30, 2018/in Archived/by FreshySites

So should this be a letter of thanks or an account of an outstanding volunteer event? I say both. Let’s call it, “Leadership Prince William partners with Comcast Cares at Georgetown South”. From a perspective of gratitude, we could call it, “ The Georgetown South Community Council says thank you for caring for us as we care for our own”.  No, let’s call it, “This community has a new story to tell” or “Amor equals love in the largely immigrant community of Georgetown South”. So many possibilities for a day of possibilities realized.

My name is Meg Carroll, I am the community manager for the Georgetown South Community Council, a 54-year-old homeowners’ association in the City of Manassas. We are a community of 860 houses, 22 acres, 13 streets, and 4,000 residents, most of whom are Latino. We have returned over the past several years to that which the community espoused in 1964 as a founding principle, “A community that cares for its own.”  In December of 2017, a member of Leadership Prince William Class of 2018 came to me and asked if Georgetown South would like to be part of Comcast Cares Day. All I knew about Comcast Cares at the time was that it would bring a huge volunteer presence to our community so my answer was a resounding yes.

Leadership Prince William then worked directly with the Georgetown South staff to develop the projects for the day. This is a recount of the amazing quantity of work done by over 200 volunteers on April 21stin just four hours.

  • Spread over 300 yards of mulch on 45 play areas
  • Prepped the community garden to cultivate vegetables for the community’s Food Pantry
  • Painted 30 fences on the frontage of the community which is also the southern gateway to the City
  • Painted 43 picnic tables in attractive jewel tones for use in the community engagement areas
  • Planted 24 window boxes at the front entrances to the community
  • Created an AMOR sign to represent this community in the tradition of the “LOVE” signs throughout the Commonwealth, but recognizing our predominantly Latino population
  • Installed unique address plaques on the rear fences of all 860 homes to assist public safety personnel
  • Gave to Georgetown South a sense of belonging to the City of Manassas and the belief that it has much to contribute as “A Community that cares for its own.”

Comcast Cares has been doing these events for 18 years, but this is the first time that Georgetown South was a beneficiary. Far beyond their physical labors, the volunteers also experienced a sense of welcome from a loving community and returned that feeling. The older participants, aware of a much different reality surrounding Georgetown South than they encountered on Saturday, celebrated the transformation they saw in this community. We, the staff, board members, residents and owners of Georgetown South acknowledge with gratitude the work done by the volunteers, which included a great number of our own residents. Georgetown South truly is “A Community with a New Story to Tell”. Thanks to everyone who participated for contributing to our story.

Meg Carroll

222 Local Volunteers Show Some “AMOR” to Georgetown South

222 Local Volunteers Show Some “AMOR” to Georgetown South

On Saturday, April 21 the 2018 Class of Leadership Prince William, together with Comcast employees and a total of over 200 volunteers, gathered in the Manassas neighborhood of Georgetown South for five hours of service. The massive beautification effort was a part of the 17th Annual Comcast Cares Day, something Leadership Prince William graduates and supporters have participated in for the last 4 years. As a special gift to Georgetown South, Leadership Prince William class members came up with the idea for an AMOR sign, similar to the LOVE signs seen across Virginia; a nod to the roughly 87% Spanish-speaking population of Georgetown South. The sign was made from pallets and will be displayed near the community vegetable garden.

Andrea Short, Executive Director for Leadership Prince William explained why Georgetown South was chosen for this year’s project: “The community at-large has long held a negative perception of Georgetown South. But today that perception is no longer valid. Aside from the beautification and safety improvement projects we did, the real  ‘why’ of this project was to bring attention to the great work that has already been done there. I think our volunteers were very impressed with the community and its people.”

Armed with shovels, paintbrushes, drills and rakes, the volunteers completed a long list of projects in the allotted time, including: 2oo yards of mulch spread over 13 playgrounds; prepping the community vegetable garden for planting; painting and decorating 31 picnic tables; planting 18 flower boxes; and applying a fresh coat of paint to the fences along Grant Avenue—the public face of Georgetown South. The volunteers also completed a unique project to improve public safety.  A small team affixed 860 house numbers to rear fences for every single residence in Georgetown South, enabling police and fire to locate houses more quickly and accurately.

Georgetown South Community Manager, Meg Carroll, and her staff committed time and resources to extensive prep work so that volunteers could achieve the maximum amount of results on event day. In addition to the support of Leadership Prince William and Comcast, the project was made possible by the following donors and sponsors: Washington Gas; Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center; The Bodai Group;  PRTC/OmniRide; Pitkins ACE Hardware; Cardinal Management Group; Todos Supermarket; MICRON Technology, Inc.;  Property Service Group; Sherwin Williams Paint Store: Manassas #5151; Wolseley Industrial Group; Creative Landscape, LLC; Prince William County Landfill; WEISCO; Chris & Lexi Jewell; Katy Keegan; Virginia Cooperative Extension;  Crayons to Perfume; William Paz; Chadwick, Washington, Moriarty, Elmore & Bunn; Shannon Willet, Long & Foster; Loyal Hygiene Solutions; Grace United Methodist Church;  Platinum Property Management; The City of Manassas; QMT Windchimes;  Shining Sol Candle Company; Potomac Nationals; Manassas Mall; Jirani Coffeehouse; Vertical Rock Indoor Climbing Center; El Garage; Metro Sign & Design; and Mariachi’s Tequileria &  Restaurant.

What is Comcast Cares Day?

Comcast Cares Day began in 2001 to celebrate a commitment to volunteerism. This day mobilizes Comcast employees, their families and friends to work alongside community partners like Leadership Prince William and public officials to revitalize, refurbish and beautify communities and neighborhoods. Leadership Prince William partnered with Comcast for the fourth consecutive year of volunteerism in the Greater Prince William area.

Volunteers Sought for Comcast Cares Day

For the fourth year in a row, Leadership Prince William and Comcast are partnering on a local community service project for the 17th Annual Comcast Cares Day. On Saturday, April 21, from 8:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m., close to 300 volunteers are needed to carry out large-scale community beautification efforts in the Georgetown South subdivision in Manassas, Virginia. Volunteer registration is available online at www.leadershipprincewilliam.org. All volunteers are provided with a commemorative t-shirt and lunch, courtesy of Comcast. This event takes place rain or shine.

Georgetown South Community Manager, Meg Carroll, and her staff have committed time and resources to extensive prep work so that volunteers can achieve the maximum amount of results on event day.

Andrea Short, Executive Director for Leadership Prince William explained how Georgetown South was chosen for this year’s project: “Each year the members of our Adult Signature Program work in teams to propose various projects for Comcast Cares Day. Then we submit the proposals to Comcast for a final decision. The team that put together the Georgetown South project proposal had such a passion for the community that it really stood out. It wasn’t so much that they needed our help; it was the fact that this community has already come so far on their own. We get the chance to simply showcase their progress and help propel their efforts even further forward. The community at-large has a perception of Georgetown South as being riddled with crime and violence. But today that’s no longer the truth. So aside from the beautification and safety improvement projects we will be doing, the real work is in bringing attention to the great work that has already being done there. The Georgetown South community motto is, ‘The Community That Cares for it’s Own.’ On Comcast Cares Day, we come together and we all become that community caring for our own.”

On April 21 volunteers will complete several large projects that will benefit the 4,000+ residents of Georgetown South, over half of which are children.  Projects are available for volunteers ages 10 and above, and groups from local businesses, churches, scouting groups and even families are encouraged to participate.

Day’s Agenda:

ALL event volunteers must check in at the registration/check-in area at the Georgetown South Community Center (9444 Taney Road, Manassas, VA 20110).
