Tell us a little about what you do:
Andrea (Short) Money, Executive Director, Leadership Prince William
I am the Executive Director of Leadership Prince William. That means I manage a staff of 1 (plus myself) along with a legion of volunteers. I answer to a Board of 26 Regents/Directors + nearly 400 alumni. I am in charge of the planning and implementation of all of our events and two programs (adult and youth). Luckily I have some really great people helping to make it all happen. And yes, this is what I do full time. 🙂
What’s new since you graduated from LPW?
Since graduating from LPW I have been through quite a bit in the way of life changes. I went through the Signature Program at just the right time—it was a real turning point for me. {We can meet for coffee if you want to hear all about it.} But the last 2 years have been very good to me. I left my position at the Prince William Chamber, started this job with LPW, bought my grandparents’ house, got engaged, got married and had my first child in June!
What is your favorite LPW memory?
There are a lot of great memories to choose from, but I think Education Day may have been my favorite. Specifically, going to the Hylton Planetarium and discovering that they are open to the public. I’ve been back several times for various shows. Laser Led Zeppelin is awesome. You should go!
How has LPW helped you get to where you are today?
LPW taught me the value of what I bring to the table because of my Emergenetics profile, knowledge, relationships and experience. What a confidence boost this program was for me! Recently I was having a conversation with someone I had just met and she stopped me to make sure she had heard me correctly: That I don’t have a college education and yet I still have this great job and I’m making a decent living. She was blown away. I know I’m not the only one who has ended up right where I belong because of my LPW experience. It feels great to be a part of something that helps people discover their own potential…even when they’re already doing big things.
What does leadership mean to you?
To me leadership is service. I won’t ask someone to do something that I wouldn’t do myself. In fact, if I’m asking you to take on a task, it’s probably while I’m right in the middle of doing it myself. If someone is going to follow me, I want them to know for certain that I’m more interested in seeing them succeed than in taking credit for myself.
Any final thoughts?
Thanks to Kathy Ellington and Kathy Bentz for making this organization so much fun to be a part of. If I’m able to accomplish anything it’s just because I’m standing on the shoulders of two brilliant, sparkly and generous ladies.
