The Big Winners at Gourmet Guys Give Back

Manassas, VA- On Sunday, December 8 Leadership Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce hosted their 4th Annual Gourmet Guys Give Back amateur cooking competition at Linton Hall School in Bristow, Virginia.  Over 200 adults and children came through the doors, including Santa Claus himself!

Guests sampled dishes and voted for their favorites to identify the Peoples’ Choice winners. Judges’ Awards were given by professionals in the food service industry: Eric Pollard, Executive Chef at Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center; Charles Gilliam, Owner of Okra’s Cajun Creole; Gina Michak, Owner of “From Gina’s Kitchen;” Kumar Iyer, Owner of Rangoli Restaurant and Shawn Terry of Smokin’ Shawn’s BBQ. Gourmet Guys Give Back featured a visit from Santa Claus, children’s activities by ImagiNation Learning Centers, and live music by local singer-songwriter Greg Dodson.

And the winners are….

  • Judges’ Awards:
    • BEST APPETIZER: Larb Sliders by Xiao-Yin Byrom, Owner of Tang’s Alterations, Bridal & Bespoke;
    • BEST SOUP/CHILI (and winner of the Judges’ Top Prize): Thai Fusion Soup by Xiao-Yin Byrom;
    • BEST SALAD/SIDE DISH: Minted Cucumber Salad by Xiao-Yin Byrom;
    • BEST MAIN DISH: The Royal Masala by Shan Lateef, a student in Prince William County Public Schools and a past graduate of the Leadership Prince William Summer Youth Academy;
    • BEST GRILL ITEM: Smoked Beef Brisket by Brian Sipes of the Prince William County Service Authority; a member of the Leadership Prince William Class of 2020;
    • BEST DESSERT: Chocolate Éclair Cake by Aaron Tolson, Development Director at ACTS and a 2018 graduate of Leadership Prince William.

  • People’s Choice Awards:
    • BEST APPETIZER: Triangles of Heaven (samosas) by Shan Lateef;
    • BEST SOUP/CHILI: Papa D’s Lobster Bisque by Dave Merli;
    • BEST SALAD/SIDE DISH: Minted Cucumber Salad by Xiao-Yin Byrom;
    • BEST MAIN DISH: The Royal Masala by Shan Lateef;
    • BEST DESSERT: Chocolate Éclair Cake by Aaron Tolson.
    • FAN FAVORITE: Smoked Beef Brisket by Brian Sipes of the Prince William County Service Authority. Brian’s brisket received 94 total votes, making it a run-away for the top prize.

Get Out the Stretchy Pants: Local Leaders to Compete with Home-Cooked Favorites at 4th Annual Contest

 

Manassas, VA- Come hungry! Leadership Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce will host their 4th Annual Gourmet Guys Give Back event from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, at Linton Hall School in Bristow, Virginia.  This family-friendly event is open to the public and will feature up to 20 local amateur chefs who will compete for People’s Choice and Judges’ Awards for their tastiest dishes. Tickets are available online at www.GourmetGuysGiveBack.com . Adult tickets are $25; children ages 6 to 13 are $10; children under 6 are free.

 

Guests will be able to sample all of the dishes—appetizers, soups, side dishes and entrees—and vote for their favorites to identify the Peoples’ Choice winners. Local professional chefs will select the Judges’ Award winners. Gourmet Guys Give Back also features a visit from Santa Claus, children’s activities by Imagination Learning Centers, raffle prizes, and live music by Greg Dodson.

 

Jacqueline Krick, Chairman of the Board for Leadership Prince William and owner of ECU Communications, encouraged families to attend. “Gourmet Guys Give Back has proven to be an excellent family-oriented event for Leadership Prince William. It truly has something for everyone and is worth attending. The food is incredible. It seems to get better each year as the chefs try to outdo themselves and each other. There is no need to be affiliated with either partner organization to participate!”

 

Another facet of this year’s event: anyone can sponsor a pack of fifteen tickets to be given to the local police or fire and rescue department of their choice for just $300. The package is called “Give Back to the Good Guys” and can be purchased on the website, www.gourmetguysgiveback.com.

 

“As we move into our fourth year with this event, we hope to continue to build additional support from the community,” says Prince William Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Debbie Jones. “Many of the chefs are visible members of the community—elected officials, business leaders, even some not-for-profit executives—but at Gourmet Guys they lay it all on the line to compete for your votes: as the best amateur chef in our community.” She went on to note that the Chamber is pleased to be partnering with Leadership Prince William for another year.

Big Winners at Gourmet Guys Give Back 2018

 

Manassas, VA- On Sunday, December 2nd, Leadership Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce co-hosted their 3rd Annual Gourmet Guys Give Back event at Linton Hall School in Bristow, VA.  The event was open to the public and featured 16 local amateur chefs competing for People’s Choice and Judges’ Awards for their tastiest dishes. Amid the tasty dishes and competition, there was live music and activities for the kids; including face painting by Dabbledy Doo and organized play by ImagiNation Early Childhood Learning Center. Even Santa Claus made an appearance courtesy of Fathom Realty.

Professionals doling out the Judges’ Awards included Charles Gilliam, owner of Okra’s Cajun Creole; Eric Pollard, Executive Chef at Novant Health UVA Health System and Mark Kowalewski, Co-Owner of 3 Firefighters and a Pig.

Best Side Dish: Mexican Street Corn by Dave Merli

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS

Best Appetizer: Ceviche Indulgence by Vicente Garcia

Best Soup or Chili: Chili Willy Brisket & Black Bean Chili by Bill White

Best Side Dish: Smokey Bear BBQ Beans by Ken Krick

Best Main Dish: Tacos Al Pastor by Dave Merli

Best Grill Item: Whitlock’s Wonderful Marinated Filet Mignon by Bennett Whitlock

 

The FAN FAVORITE trophy, for the dish that received the most votes overall went to Bill White and his sous chef Rob Sturm for their Chili Willy Brisket & Black Bean Chili. The two managed to unseat reigning champ, Supervisor Marty Nohe, known for always putting bacon in his dishes.

Gourmet Guys Give Back: Local Business Leaders to Compete with their Home-Cooked Favorites
