Hylton Performing Arts Center at George Mason University
Tell us a little about your current position:
I’ve been with Mason and the Hylton Center for seven years. In my current role as Assistant Director of Development, I work with volunteers and donors, as well as corporations and foundations of all sizes, to help them find meaningful ways to engage in the life of the Hylton Center – whether that’s through attending a performance, volunteerism, or philanthropic support. I find that I’m constantly in awe of the ways people and companies elect to manifest their passion for the arts and for this region.
What’s new since you graduated from LPW?
A lot! My husband and I welcomed our first child, John-Paul, just three weeks before I graduated from Leadership Prince William in 2015, and our second, Virginia, just turned 1 year old! I also made a major life change when our family relocated to the Shenandoah Valley in 2016. I feel very fortunate to have been able to maintain my role here at the Hylton Center, working remotely and traveling to the area to work with those interested in becoming involved with the Hylton Center. I really credit the connections I’ve made in this region, especially through Leadership Prince William, in making that transition possible.
What is your favorite LPW memory?
Definitely the opening retreat at Skyland Resort. It’s not often that you get the opportunity to literally retreat and reflect on your role in your organization and in this community. It was a real gift to have that intentional time set aside, as well as get to know our class members in such a beautiful place.
How has Leadership Prince William helped you get to where you are today?
Going through LPW was one of the best things I could have done for my career. It introduced me to so many people who I’ve stayed in touch with through our work at the Hylton Center, and I also now have an instant connection when meeting new people who are also LPW alumni! It’s amazing to see how many LPW alumni are involved at the Hylton Center – as patrons, volunteers, performers, and donors. We so appreciate all of the support and would welcome all LPW alumni to become involved!
What does leadership mean to you?
I think of the amazing leaders I’ve known – people who are confident in their strengths and recognize their weaknesses – and then seek out experts to fill those gaps and lead a team ripe for success. It takes a generous amount of humility to achieve that level of balanced leadership, and when it’s done well it inspires future leadership to follow suit!
